The signs of the Zodiac

1. Aries -
(March 21 - April 20)
Aries is the first sign of the ZODIAC and corresponds to the ascent of the sun and the emergence of Spring in the northern hemisphere. The symbol, which almost looks like a sprouting weed, also symbolizes the curving horns of the ram and it is most definitely a 'positive' or male sign. Also associated with the red planet of Mars and the element of fire, people born during its astrological interval are not surprisingly given psychological traits associated with these images. Arians are seen as courageous, energetic, direct in approach, and freedom-loving sometimes to the point of being selfish, quick-tempered, and impatient

2. Taurus -
(April 21 to May 20)
Taurus is the second sign of the ZODIAC, located between equinox and solstice. Pictorially, Taurus is represented by the bull, and in keeping with this image, it is linked with an animal nature, a lust for life, as well as a capacity for work. People born during this astronomical interval are said to be dependable and practical but also capable of being possessive and obsessive.

3. Gemini -
(May 21 - June 20)
Gemini, the twins, the third sign of the ZODIAC, is generally the symbol of duality and also human contact. Some zodiacs employ the image of two children holding hands while others use as a man and a woman or even, in the case of a Coptic Zodiac, as a pair of lovers. Positive traits ascribed to those born under this sign traditionally include intelligence and skill at communication with negative traits including inconsistency and a tendency toward gossip.

4. Cancer -

Cancer is the fourth sign of the ZODIAC, expressed symbolically as a pair of spirals, in order to convey the changing direction of the movement of the sun. Pictorially, cancer is shown as a crab. Classified as a water and moon sign, those born under its influence are characterized as sensitive, withdrawn, and shy, but with perseverance.

5. Leo -
(July 23 - August 22)
Leo is the fifth sign of the ZODIAC. Sometimes symbolized by an oval with a rising and then downward curving “tail”, reminiscent of some sun symbols, the pictorial symbol for the astrological sign is also sometimes a lion. Bound together with summer (in the northern hemisphere) and associated with fire, heat, and light, people born during its astrological interval are not surprisingly given psychological traits associated with these images. Leos are seen as high-powered and strong willed, with ambition and a flair for life, although in extreme cases to the point of being aggressive, intolerant, and opinionated.

6. Virgo -
(August 23 to September 22)
Virgo is the sixth sign of ZODIAC, just before the equinox, and ruled by Mercury. Pictorially, Virgo is depicted as a young maiden carrying a sheaf of wheat, reminiscent of various fertility and harvest goddesses. People born during this astronomical interval are said to be modest and analytical but also capable of being overly critical and worriers.

7. Libra -
(September 23 to October 23)
Libra is the seventh sign of the ZODIAC, beginning at the midpoint of the astronomical year as the sun passes from the northern to the southern hemisphere. Symbolically it is shown as two horizontal lines, with the top line arching into a curve in the middle before returning to a straight line. Pictorially, the SCALES are used to represent this sign of the middle of the year. For those born during the influence of the alignment of stars and planets during this period, positive traits that are assigned include fairness and diplomacy while the negative are thought to include being indecisive and changeable.

8. Scorpio -
(October 23 to November 21)
Scorpio is the eighth sign of the Zodiac, with Mars as ruler. Pictorially, of course, this sign is shown as a scorpion. As with other arrow symbols, Scorpio is associated with the masculine and with dynamism. In ancient Egypt, it was thought to offset the scorpion’s venom and so represented healing and resurrection. People born during the influence of this astronomical period are said to possess positive and negative traits related to strong emotions: persistence to the point of stubbornness and discernment that may turn to jealousy.

9. Sagittarius -
(November 22 to December 20)
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the ZODIAC, occurring just before the winter solstice of the northern hemisphere (hence the summer solstice of the southern hemisphere). Along with Aries and Leo, this is one of the fire signs. In pictorial form, Sagittarius is the centaur archer. Typical Sagittarian individuals are characterized as having an ego which grows wider or deeper, seeking its own limitations and attempting to overcome them. Hence they aspire to heights and are driven to ideals that also appear as inflation of the ego and their own importance.

10. Capricorn -
(21 December - 19 January)
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the ZODIAC and it begins the winter solstice. It is a symbolic representation of the goat's body and fish’s tail and reflects the ambivalent nature of those born under the influence of this sign. In the Far East, it is the first sign of the ZODIAC. The keywords for individuals born under this sign are ambition, realism, hard work, and the ability to find constructive solutions but also rigidity and pessimism.

11. Aquarius -
(January 20 - February 18)
Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the ZODIAC. Sometimes symbolized by a pair of undulating or zigzag horizontal lines, representing water, the pictorial symbol for the astrological sign is also sometimes a man pouring water out of an urn. While all the astrological signs have certain psychological and behavioral associations for people born during their intervals (for example, Aquarians might be characterized as social, intelligent, and humanistic to the extreme of superficiality, dissociation, and imitative behavior), the sign of Aquarius has also become a symbol of the New Age movement and humanitarianism. That association might be derived from the water that Aquarius pours over the earth -- interpreted as the water of awareness.

12. Pisces -
(February 19 to March 20)
Pisces is the twelfth and last sign of the ZODIAC, falling immediately before the vernal equinox (before spring). Its symbolic sign is almost like a right parentheses and then a left, connected in the middle by a dash that runs across their middles. One of the water signs, it is depicted traditionally as a pair of fish, back to back and joined at their mouths by a sort of umbilical cord. This type of symbol translates to becoming a part of the greater whole, the ocean of humanity. Persons born during the interval while Pisces reigns are said to encompass the positive traits of being intuitive and spiritual and the negative traits of being vague and secretive.
