This was a way to show the US doing something against the threat the Soviet Union was posing and the advancement in USSR space science, which the US was struggling to catch up with. The Russians were the first to send a guy into orbit and the first to send someone to live in space for 6 months. This is a funny story though.. I remember in early nineties (don’t; know the exact date) the Russians sent a group of astronauts on some research project. They spent nearly a year in space but were left stranded in space as Russia didn’t have the money/budget to bring them back to earth:-)

Did they send then in space knowing that they were short on cash or were they hoping to send it later through intergalactic banks?
