Sahara : Mme Clinton renouvelle le soutien américain au Maroc

MARRAKECH, La secrétaire d'Etat américaine Hillary Clinton a renouvelé lundi soir à Marrakech (sud) le soutien des Etats-Unis à la position marocaine sur la question du Sahara occidental.

"Il est important pour moi de réaffirmer, ici au Maroc, qu'il n'y a pas eu de changement dans la politique" à ce sujet, a déclaré la chef de la diplomatie américaine lors d'un point de presse conjoint avec son homologue marocain Taieb Fassi Fihri.

Le Maroc propose un plan de large autonomie sous sa souveraineté pour mettre fin au conflit du Sahara occidental alors que le Front Polisario, soutenu par l'Algérie, réclame l'indépendance de cette ancienne colonie espagnole administrée par Rabat depuis 1975. Hillary Clinton a par ailleurs rendu hommage au roi du Maroc Mohammed VI, qu'elle avait rencontré dans l'après-midi.

"Les Etats-Unis ont regardé avec beaucoup d'admiration les progrès que le Maroc a accomplis sous sa direction et celle du gouvernement démocratiquement élu du Maroc", a-t-elle dit.

Mme Clinton a salué en particulier "les réformes qui ont accordé de nouvelles libertés aux femmes".
