| Source: http://www.arabicnews.com/ansub/Daily/Day/041015/2004101521.html +++ Morocco announces US $800 Mn program to develop southern provinces Morocco, Economics, 10/15/2004 Moroccan Prime Minister, Driss Jettou, announced, in Laayoune (Southern Morocco) Thursday, an ambitious program to develop the country's southern provinces known as the Sahara, with a global investment of US $800 million for the period 2004-2008. This announcement was made at the first meeting of the administration board of the Agency for Social and Economic Development of Southern Provinces, held under the chairmanship of the Moroccan premier. The Agency will sign 42 conventions with other partners to carry out the social-economic development of the region, part of the five-year US $800 million-worth development program that will fund 226 projects. Projects to be carried out in southern provinces will cover several sectors, including housing and urban development (US $188 million), fisheries (US $177 million), water and environment (US $256 million), roads, ports and infrastructures (US $173 million). The implementation of these projects will enable to eradicate unhealthy housing and generating job opportunities in various sectors. The Agency will operate in an area of 416.474 Km2, that is 58.6 percent of the national territory, with a population of over 700.000 inhabitants. |
