Iran Focus, Téhéran, 25 juillet – Des affrontements ont éclaté entre des protestataires et des forces de sécurité à Ahwaz dans le sud de l’Iran dimanche soir après que les autorités aient essayé d’empêcher des manifestations hostiles au pouvoir de prendre de l’ampleur. Plusieurs véhicules de la police et des banques d’Etat ont été incendiés selon des témoins oculaires.Les témoins ont rapporté que des affrontements violents ont éclaté dans le district de Chilang Abad et se sont rapidement étendus aux secteurs de Lachkar Abad, Pundj Tabagheh, Machali, Kian Pars, Kout Abdollah, Khachayar et Zarghan.Des dizaines de personnes avaient été tuées dans des accrochages qui avaient duré une semaine entre des manifestants principalement arabes et les forces de sécurité à Ahwaz et dans plusieurs autres villes du Khouzistan dans le sud de l’Iran en avril.[color=CC0000] La zone stratégique contient la plupart des champs pétroliers du pays.[/color]Dimanche, les manifestants lançaient des slogans hostiles au pouvoir et exigeaient la fin du « nettoyage ethnique ». Des policiers anti-émeute et des agents de sécurité en civil ont chargé les protestataires à coups de matraque et procédé à de nombreuses arrestations, selon des témoins. La population en colère a attaqué des véhicules des forces de sécurité de l’Etat et libéré une partie des détenus. Les protestataires ont monté des barricades dans plusieurs rues en brûlant des pneus. Alors que les affrontements prenaient de l’ampleur, plusieurs branches de banques d’Etat, comme la banque Meli Kian, ont été incendié. A Kouy Enghelab, les forces de sécurité ont tiré sur la foule faisant plusieurs blessés.Des heurts ont aussi éclaté entre les protestataires et les forces de sécurité samedi.[color=CC0000]Ahwaz est actuellement sous un couvre-feu de facto, selon les habitants, qui ont rapporté la présence d’un dispositif policier massif dans les environs de la ville peuplés en majorité d’Arabes.

TEHRAN, July 25 (Reuters) - The Kurdish town of Mahabad in northwestern Iran was calm on Monday following days of riots that erupted after police shot dead a young Kurdish man, a spokesman for the Iranian Interior Ministry said.
"The security situation is under control and the city is calm," said Interior Ministry spokesman Jahanbakhsh Khanjani.
"It was not a political issue at all."
The ISNA students news agency said at least one police officer had been killed and 18 protestors arrested during the riots, which were triggered by the fatal shooting of Kamal Asfarm on July 9.
Police said Asfarm was on the run and had refused to surrender. Khanjani said he died while police were taking him to hospital.
Relatives say Asfarm was an activist who led protests against the ruling clerical establishment in the western Kurdish towns, demanding more power for Iran's Kurdish ethnic minority.
During the unrest people smashed and set fire to cars and banks and clashed with security forces, who responded with tear gas, ISNA reported.
Former Kurdish lawmaker Bahaeddin Adab told Reuters the unrest resulted from the denial of the Kurdish minority's "democratic rights" since the 1979 Islamic revolution.
"Their rights have been denied in the past two decades. Iran's Kurds are ready to begin a civil disobedience movement," said Adab, a former MP from the Kurdish town of Sanandaj.
Adab said Iranian Kurds had used the killing as an excuse to show their dissatisfaction.
"Kurds want their share of the power and wealth. They want justice in the distribution of that power," he added.
Iran denies any discrimination against ethnic minorities.
Adab said pictures posted by Asfarm's family on the internet showed he had been tortured by police.
Officials have denied such reports. A local official told ISNA that the Internet pictures of Asfarm were taken after an autopsy to find the cause of his death.
Predominantly Sunni Muslim Kurds rioted in at least two other towns in response to rumours Asfarm's death, the official IRNA news agency said on Monday.
Iran is home to about six million Kurds and its 67 million population is an ethnic patchwork. Roughly half the population is Persian, with the other 50 percent made up of Azeris, Kurds, Arabs, Lors, Baluch and Turkmen.
Tehran is very sensitive about any suggestion of ethnic unrest, particularly by its Arab and Kurd populations, and anti-government demonstrations are usually dealt with quickly.
