" Despite the United States' diminished image around the world, it still rates high as a hot tourist destination, and Hawaii is a favorite gateway.

Lonely Planet, which markets its tourist guides to travelers worldwide, lists China as the hottest destination, followed surprisingly by the United States in its latest annual listing.

The U.S. entry mentions Hawaii, New Orleans and New York City's Brooklyn as favorite U.S. destinations.

Filling out the top five on the Lonely Planet list are Morocco, Argentina and Brazil.
