Par défaut moroccans in the US

salam everyone,

i'm curious to know how many of you out there are currently living in the US. which city/region (if you don't mind saying)?
were you born here? if so, do you know both darija and al fus7a? did you come here to go to school/work? do you plan on living your entire life here?
how easy has it been to meet other moroccans in your particular region? do you have close friends that are moroccan?

i know, that's a lot of questions
but i'd love to hear your responses... it's so rare that i come across moroccans where i live. anyway, i'll reply later with my answers to the above questions

the questions are getting too personal, next thing we know, we'll be asked about our social security numbers and our credit card numbers.
but since you jumped in cuty-pie, i'll be the first volenteer to answer.
rebels are not afraid..
ok hind76,
you asked few questions, ill give you a short biography..
welcome to the world of Matsuzaka, the Rebel Samurai
i was born in the states, northeast , while my parents were studying at Boston University. i spent few years in Morocco then moved back and forth to the states.
my parents were big rebels, they listened to Bob Marley, Rolling Stones, Nass Guiwan.. they did not believe in feeding propaganda to a child weither its the American system of education, the French system or the Moroccan system..
they were always against sending us to regular schools so most of my studies were done at home here in the states by my parents or by my grand parents in Morocco who were science teachers at the university level.
i took the SAT and other tests at the age of 15 and scored very high scores, the only letter i sent to a university was to MIT and i got accepted.
i got my masters degree a the age of 23.
the name of the university/institute should give you an idea where i live, but i visit Morocco every summer.
as for where im planning to live one day, in Morocco or stay in the states?
ard allah kbira kol wahed i5ish fin ma bra, tawahed maado lha9 igol lakhor nta maadeksh lhak t3ish hna, hadi bladi.
blad dial allah bouhdou mashi dial ibad allah..
borders to me are an obstacle that blocks the transfer of civilisation from one village to another.
im thinking about spending few years in japan for personal raisons, then i will decide where to raise my future kids.
anymore questions?
now you're next, so don't be shy!!!
cuty-pie, you're next after hind76!!!
salam

Matsuzaka! O_o

I don't live in the States, so I am probably not welcome in this thread. But wow Matsuzaka! Couldn't help being bouche bee at your story of life. Very interesting!

That's all I wanted to say, tried to send that in private but it didn't work.
Got it off my system!

*Big wows. O_o!*

i know, that's a lot of questions
Here we go: I "semi-moved" to a little but friendly city 65 miles south of Denver nearly 20 years ago, staying there 4-6 months/year on average. The rest of the time in Germany. Freelancing as IT specialist (backbone networking and security), teleworking most of the time. Background in CS. Born in Europe, but neither in an EU member state nor behind the iron curtain. Parents moved back to Rabat, when I was 5; attended moroccan schools (not mission francaise) until Baccalaureat; moved to Germany for studies then work. While studying, frequent visits to the US (e.g. summer schools in Berkeley...) and Canada. Darija, Fus'ha, French and Spanish okay, though a bit rusty if I have to use them actively - no problems listening or reading. Fluent in English and German. I'd love to learn Russian someday, perhaps Japanese too. In addition to IT, I enjoy literature and reading about history, psychology and global politics.

salam,

so finally i get around to answering my own questions... it's been interested reading the replies so far, so thanks to those of you who have done so.

anyway, this'll serve as a sort of introductory post i guess since i haven't really made one yet.

i was born in the states, and am currently living in southern california, though i will be attending georgetown next year in washington d.c. my parents are from fez but came to the US (east coast) for college. i learned al fus7a long before darija, and only spend like a month out of the year (at most) in morocco, which is kinda sad.... but that's life. i don't plan on living in the states my whole life, but i don't plan on living in morocco either. i'd like to go back to syria where my family lived for a year when my dad was on sabbatical, and there are several other countries i'd love to get a taste of. i can't imagine staying on one place all my life... i wanna experience the world.

as for moroccan friends- there are tons of arabs where i live, but very few are moroccans. my close group of friends is made up of mostly palestinian americans. anyways... that's all i've got for now. i gotta go to class

salam
